Eternal

Devotions were on Psalm 11 - "In the Lord I take refuge." Dr Rhodes left us with the question - where do you take refuge? When things are hard, is it in the Lord that we seek protection or do we find other ways to "protect" ourselves? 

We started rounds in the NICU because they had a "sick" baby - the baby had CPR for an hour after delivery and was only breathing about 4 times a minute when we arrived. Jeremy bagged the baby for an hour while we got some medicine going and a make-shift bubble CPAP set up. The baby is still alive but very sick and will likely die soon unless a miracle occurs. 

As a family we are discussing one attribute of God each day. Today's attribute was eternal. We talked about what it meant that God is eternal and we each shared a bible verse. One verse shared was 1 Timothy 1:17 "Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen." This verse reminded me of the hymn based on those verses: Immortal, Invisible which says..

Immortal, invisible God only wise 

To all, life thou givest, to both great and small

In all life thou livest, the true life of all

We blossom and flourish like leaves on the tree

That wither and perish, but not changeth thee 

In difficult times, like watching a newborn die, refuge can be found in an eternal God who is loving and wise and changeth not. In fact, I can't think of anything else that offers any comfort or help in such times of need - certainly my human mind can not be my refuge or I would despair. This baby will blossom and flourish or wither and perish but God is still God and in Him only is true life. Pray for the miracle!
